most common questions and answers about Latisse

About Latisse®

Latisse® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% is the first and only prescription treatment approved by the FDA for inadequate or sparse eyelashes – lashes grow longer, fuller and darker with Latisse®. Latisse is manufactured and backed by the global leader in pharmaceuticals, Allergan. Over 5 million Latisse kits/bottles have been sold since 2009. Latisse results in the growth of new lashes, which are thicker and fuller, and darker than your normal lashes. Used regularly, lash growth will continue for as long as the product is used. Patients treated with Latisse in the clinical study experienced:

  • 106% increase in lash thickness/fullness
  • 25% increase in lash length
  • 18% increase in lash darkness

Application takes only seconds per day, and is simple and easy to apply. Using a special applicator supplied free with the product, apply a single drop of the solution at the base of upper lashes, where the bases of the lashes emerge from the eyelid. Any excess solution is simply blotted away gently with a tissue or soft cloth. Latisse offers a much more permanent solution to mascara and false lashes, which must be removed and reapplied each day, and dyes which fade away over time. Latisse is manufactured & sold in two different volume, same sized bottles: 5ml = 10 weeks of Latisse application(best deal, lower price per ml) 3ml = 5 weeks of Latisse application.

Will Latisse change my eye color?

Short Answer: This is a common misunderstanding of a rare side effect. In clinical trials of people using Lumigan (the version of Latisse used to treat glaucoma) dropped directly into the eye, less than 1-2% of patients experienced a side effect that darkened the brown areas around their pupils, making their eyes appear more brownish. Because Latisse is applied only to the lid, it’s extremely unlikely to affect your iris. However, it still has to be reported as a possible side effect.

Detailed Answer: Bimatoprost (the clinical, official name of "Latisse") has been clinically trialed by Allergan and by individual doctors who were closely monitoring their patients. NO documented cases of iris color change have been reported by patients using Latisse AS PRESCRIBED. The eye-lash enhancing effects of bimatoprost were discovered by accident. Bimatoprost is a medication that has long been used in the treatment of glaucoma, and when these patients all reported growing thick, lush lashes as a happy side-effect of their glaucoma treatment, the pharmaceutical company behind it decided to also market the product for aesthetic purposes. The only instances in which eye-color changes have been reported are by patients who qualified for ALL of the following combined at the same time: (1) used bimatoprost as an eye-drop for glaucoma treatment, hence dropped directly into the iris daily, year after year (Latisse is placed outside the eye ball, on eye lid…NOT directly into the iris daily, year after year) (2) these patients, who dropped bimatoprost directly into their eyes day after day, also had green eyes WITH brown flecks...and only these brown flecks enlarged slightly over time (again after dropping the glaucoma solution directly into the iris daily, year after year…Latisse is not used in this manner). Therefore, the rumors and urban myth are FALSE of Latisse changing your eye color. You don’t get your teeth cleaned at the car wash right? So in short, just like most products, if you use as directed, you have nothing to worry about. If you don't drop Latisse directly into your iris daily and over numerous years, and you don't have brown flecks in your green eyes... your brown flecks (and definitely not your eye color) will not change in any way. Allergan is so certain that Latisse is completely safe for use with any color eyes that they specifically tap light-eyed celebrities as users and spokes models; such as Brooke Shields and Claire Danes. Both followed the prescribed Latisse treatment regimen, and both then showcased their still blue eyes, now framed with long lush lashes.

Latisse 5ml bottle vs. 3ml bottle

Latisse is manufactured & sold in two different volume, same sized bottles: 5ml = 10 weeks of Latisse application (best deal, lower price per ml) 3ml = 5 weeks of Latisse application. You deserve the best value. See more growth for less money per day and per ml with the 5ml Latisse. For beginners, two 5ml Latisse bottles allows you to reach your full natural lash potential (typically at or before 16 weeks, though results can begin as early as around 6 weeks). Continual use of Latisse is required to maintain longer, fuller, darker lashes. On August 1, 2012, Allergan introduced in the USA the larger 5ml Latisse bottle vs. the original 3ml Latisse bottle.

  • 5ml Latisse has 67% more solution vs. the 3 ml bottle.
  • 5ml Latisse weighs 0.42 oz vs. 3ml bottle 0.28 oz.
  • 5ml has a cylindrical cap vs. the 3ml classic cap.

The Allergan manufactured 5ml Latisse white-bottle shape mirrors that of the 3ml bottle; though the 5ml bottle has more solution, therefore it weighs more. (It’s like the bag of chips at the grocery store, same looking bag, just 67% more chips inside and by weight; plus 5ml lasts 10 weeks vs. 3ml’s 4 weeks.)

Can Latisse be used with false lashes and contacts?

False Lashes: Yes, you can use Latisse with false lashes, though you should no longer need false lashes with Latisse. False eyelashes do remove lashes when placed on AND removed. You won't achieve optimal thickness and length until you completely stop using false eyelashes. Benefits of Latisse can be noticed in as few as 8 weeks, then maintenance phase begins at 16 weeks. So stop faking it, and start growing naturally longer thicker darker lashes today with Latisse. Contacts: Yes, you can use Latisse with contacts. But you should take them out before applying Latisse. “Just remove your contact lenses and then wait for 15 minutes after applying Latisse before putting your contacts back in.” — Dr. Marguerite McDonald, Ophthalmologist

How was Latisse discovered & how does it work?

It's a story of how one great product led to another. In 2001, Allergan developed another product, a medicated eye drop used to treat elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Many patients using this medication also began to grow longer, fuller and darker lashes as a happy side effect. This led Allergan to study the medication's active ingredient, bimatoprost, specifically for growing lashes. After a clinical trial to study the safety and effectiveness for lash growth, Latisse was approved by the FDA in December of 2008. Since then, over 5 million bottles of Latisse have been sold. “We do not know exactly how Latisse works. However, we believe it does so by increasing the growth cycle (anagen) phase of your eyelash hair cycle. Anagen is the growth phase of all hair. We believe that it increases the length of the anagen phase and the number of hairs in this growth phase.” —Dr. J. Downie, Dermatologist

How does Latisse differ from other lash products?

Latisse is an FDA-approved product that grows lashes longer, fuller and darker. Other non-prescription products have no research showing they can affect actual lash growth, let alone FDA approval. Latisse has also been used by patients to grow fuller eyebrows and hair on the head, although it is only FDA-approved for eyelash growth.

Can Latisse be used for thickening eyebrows or baldness?

Yes, customers do purchase Latisse to grow thicker eyebrows and also to grow hair in balding areas on the head and have reported positive results. However, it is only FDA-approved for eyelash growth.

How do I use Latisse?

How to use: Latisse is a treatment you apply yourself each evening to the base of the upper eyelashes. Each Latisse kit contains detailed instructions for proper application. You can also watch a video demonstration. Remove any makeup, clean the upper eyelids and remove their contact lenses, if applicable. Contact lenses can be placed back in the eye after 15 minutes following the application of Latisse. Then, using the single-use applicator brush provided in the package, one drop of Latisse is placed on the applicator brush and applied to the base of the upper eyelid lash margin (Do not apply “in” your eye or the lower lash line as excess hair growth outside the treatment area may occur). The same process is repeated using a fresh applicator brush to avoid cross contamination. Be careful not to allow the tip of the bottle or applicator to contact surrounding structures, fingers or any other unintended surface in order to avoid contamination by common bacteria known to cause infections. After applying, any excess fluid should be blotted off with a tissue. For best results, Latisse needs to be used once a day for 16 weeks for beginners. Using Latisse more than once a day will not grow your lashes faster or improve the effectiveness of the product. Continuous use of Latisse is required to keep your lashes longer darker and thicker.

Do I really have to use Latisse daily? Yes, Latisse should be applied daily to the base of the upper eyelashes. To achieve the full effect of longer, fuller and darker lashes, you should use the product daily for 16 weeks. Continual use of Latisse is required to maintain longer, fuller, darker lashes. After 16 weeks you can apply Latisse every other day, or even up to every 3 days, to maintain your lash length. It varies per person, so if you discover that your lashes are going back to their original lash length, simply apply more often (no more than once per day).

What happens if I stop using Latisse? Just like it takes some time for Latisse to work to grow lashes, if you stop using the product, your eyelashes will gradually return to their previous appearance over the course of several weeks to months.

What if I forget to apply Latisse one night? Or a few nights? “If you miss an application or a few, don't try to catch up. You don't want to double up on your treatments. Just apply the Latisse treatment the next evening and restart your schedule.” —Dr. C. Boyd, Plastic Surgeon

Latisse Tips & Tricks

Steps:

  • Each night, begin by cleaning your face. Be sure to remove your makeup and contact lenses.
  • Select a new applicator from the tray. Holding the new, sterile applicator horizontally, place one drop of Latisse solution onto the tip of the applicator.
  • Immediately and carefully draw the applicator across the skin of your upper eyelid where the lashes meet the skin. Glide the applicator from the inner to the outer part of your lash line.
  • Using a tissue or cotton round, blot any excess solution beyond the eyelid margin.
  • Dispose of the used applicator. Repeat the process with a new applicator for your other eye.

Use Tips:

  • Never use the same applicator for both eyes. This helps to minimize possible contamination between your eyelids.
  • Do not apply Latisse solution to the lower eyelids. Use only the sterile applicators that come with Latisse.
  • Wait 15 minutes after applying Latisse to reinsert contact lenses.
  • If you miss a night of application, simply wait until the next evening. Don’t try to “catch up.”

General Tips:

  • Think routine: Try to incorporate Latisse into your nightly routine — for example, after you’ve washed your face and brushed your teeth
  • Keep it handy: Store the Latisse bottle near your other skin care products or toothbrush, so you won’t forget to apply it each night.
  • Have patience: Latisse takes time to work. Only use it once a night. Use of Latisse more than once a day will not increase the growth of eyelashes more than use once a day. Some notice results in as little as 8 weeks, with maximum growth length realized around 16 weeks.
  • Start fresh: Latisse is best applied to a clean surface. Before getting started, be sure to remove makeup and contacts.
  • Follow the rules: Always use the sterile, disposable, FDA-approved applicator provided in the kit when applying Latisse. Do not try to apply with a cotton swab. Only apply Latisse to the base of upper lashes, not the lower lid.
  • Don’t play catchup: If you miss a dose one night, don’t apply more just to catch up. Simply apply Latisse the next evening and stay on schedule.
  • Beware of germs: Don’t let the tip of the bottle or applicator contact your fingers or any other unintended surface, in order to avoid contamination by common bacteria known to cause infections
  • Chart your progress: When you start using Latisse solution, be sure to mark your calendar and take pictures throughout weeks (0, 4, 8, 12, 16), so you can have your own "Before & After Gallery."
  • Stay on course: Be patient with Latisse. If you’re satisfied with your results by week 12, stick with the treatment. You’ll see the full effect of Latisse come into view at week 16. Then, congratulations, you’ve reached the maintenance phase. Continuing the use of Latisse will ensure your long lush dark lashes remain. Once Latisse use is stopped, your lashes will begin to return to their length before the use of Latisse. After 16 weeks you can apply Latisse every other day, or even up to every 3 days, to maintain your lash length. It varies per person, so if you discover that your lashes are going back to their original lash length, simply apply more often (no more than once per day).

Are there any potential side effects?

Latisse is an ophthalmic solution. If any solution gets into the eye, it is not expected to cause harm. You do not need to rinse your eyes. Latisse is not an eye drop. Change eye color? No. This is a myth/urban legend. Latisse will NOT change your eye color, no matter your eye color. “There is no evidence to suggest that Latisse will change your eye color. Over 5 million prescriptions for Latisse have been filled with no confirmed reports of iris pigmentation issues.” —Dr. Mitchel Schwartz, MD Damage to the eye? No. Not to worry if you get Latisse in your eyes! Be certain to apply just one drop to the brush, swipe it along the base of your upper lashes right where your eyeliner goes, wipe off any excess Latisse on your skin, and you shouldn’t have any problem with accidentally getting the product in your eyes. Hair growth in areas other than lashes? WHEN MISUSED, reports do indicate hair growth in other areas where hair follicles reside when applied CONTINUOUSLY over time. While Latisse is FDA approved for lashes, doctors do prescribe Latisse for eyebrows and thinning hair or baldness. (Clients do purchase Latisse to successfully grow fuller eyebrows and improve thinning hair/balding.) Eye irritation? Side effects from the initial studies showed less than 4 percent of people experienced redness, irritation and itching of the upper eyelid, which was reversed upon discontinuation Skin darkening? While this is a common concern, eyelid skin darkening is actually a less common side effect. In a study for FDA approval, localized skin darkening only occurred in approximately 2.9% of patients using Latisse. It’s caused by an increase in melanin close to where the solution is applied and is expected to reverse several weeks s after discontinuing use of the product. Latisse safety and results backed by industry leading pharmaceutical company Allergan.
